Opportunity Information: Apply for 20181115 AV
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant opportunity titled Dialogues on the Experience of War is a discretionary humanities grant offered under NEH's broader initiative, Standing Together: The Humanities and the Experience of War. Its central purpose is to fund structured, sustained reading and discussion programs that use significant humanities materials about war to help participants think more deeply about military service, combat, and the broader human consequences of war. The program is built on the idea that literature, history, philosophy, memoir, film, and other humanities sources can create a meaningful setting for reflection and conversation, especially for people whose lives have been shaped by military experience.
Although the program is primarily designed to serve U.S. military veterans, it is intentionally inclusive. Eligible participants can also include active-duty service members, military families, and interested members of the public. The emphasis is not on therapy or clinical services, but on serious, guided dialogue grounded in humanities content, with enough time and continuity for participants to engage in thoughtful, respectful, and substantive discussions across multiple sessions.
Awards can be as high as $100,000. Grant funds are intended to support two required components. First, applicants must convene at least two sustained discussion programs, each serving no fewer than fifteen participants. These are not meant to be one-off events; they should consist of multiple meetings that are long enough to allow for deep, inclusive discussion and for relationships and trust to develop over time. Second, applicants must create a preparatory program that recruits and trains the discussion leaders who will facilitate these conversations, referred to as NEH Discussion Leaders. In other words, the grant supports both the delivery of the public-facing dialogues and the up-front training and preparation needed to run them well.
The funded activities are designed to be flexible in terms of location and community setting. Both the preparatory training and the discussion programs may take place in veterans' centers, public libraries, cultural centers, college and university campuses, and other appropriate community venues. This flexibility allows applicants to design programs that meet veterans and related communities where they already gather, while still maintaining a strong humanities-centered approach.
A wide range of organizations can apply. Eligible applicants include state, county, and city or township governments; special district governments; public and state-controlled institutions of higher education; private institutions of higher education; federally recognized Native American tribal governments; and nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status (excluding higher education institutions in that nonprofit category). The funding activity category is Humanities, and the CFDA number listed for the program is 45.163. The opportunity number is 20181115 AV, it was created on September 26, 2018, and the original closing date for applications was November 15, 2018.
Overall, this opportunity supports organizations that can responsibly design and host sustained, discussion-based humanities programming focused on the lived experience of war, with an emphasis on reaching veterans while also welcoming active service members, families, and civilians into a shared civic conversation.Apply for 20181115 AV
